EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States against five Europeans working on fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the move.

The restrictions were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders contend the rules are necessary to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider existing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and European institutions.

  • A Pacific Island nation has agreed to accept dozens of individuals from the US in return for increased assistance, following signing a formal agreement with Washington.

Furthermore, a Democratic lawmaker has filed a lawsuit seeking the removal of a political figure’s name from a well-known cultural institution in Washington DC.

Analysts have also noted that recent statements regarding foreign petroleum resources reflect a wider ideology in some quarters of “resource imperialism”, drawing comparisons with historical international strategies.
