Together Can Be Streamed, and It Has the Power to Test Your Partnership.

We present a dare for those in enduring partnerships who are fans of the horror genre: Sit down with your partner and stream Together. This 2025 indie hit recently had its streaming debut on Hulu. Outwardly, it might appear like conventional physical horror, but beneath Together exists a deep examination about how we choose to love one another.

An Introductory Film Exploring Partnership Complexities

Together represents the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It showcases actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have stayed together for ten years. Having wed in real life in 2017, the actors contribute a special spark to their roles, masterfully depicting both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.

The story starts when Tim and Millie move from the urban environment to the country for Millie’s job. A somewhat stereotypical narrative setup, of course, but that’s largely where the cliches end. Together evolves into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the couple's dynamic as it is a body horror flick.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While hiking near their new home, a tempest descends, and Millie and Tim fall into an subterranean cavern. After spending the night there and managing to escape, a mysterious influence takes hold of the duo. This force compels a paranormal intimacy between them that goes well past emotional intimacy.

The entire film is a slow burn horror experience, weaving in bits of fever-dream horrors, disturbing (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and surprisingly comedic interactions (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). Shanks orchestrates these parts neatly and wraps them up in a slowly mounting aura of dread.

Layered Performances

A significant portion of Together is only the two lead actors, and they masterfully render manifold depths to the partnership at the film's core. Her self-assurance and feeling of intimacy is waning due to a emotional and physical gap. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his hesitance to chase only his struggling artistic pursuits slowly bubbles to the surface.

In contrast, Tim's character experiences isolation and isolated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve left the city and distant from his support system. He fears the idea of totally forfeiting his personal autonomy in Millie. This fear is intensified by the circumstance he does not operate a vehicle and is dependent on Millie for transportation.

Shanks’ smartest move is that he avoids making either of his characters the definite antagonist.

The couple grapple with the sort of issues that arise in any relationship over a long period. At their core, they still love one another. They share moments of joy, offer support, and share intimately at times. But under the surface, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their relationship.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the paranormal elements in Together represent these fears of excessive reliance and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the metaphor avoids being overly obvious or self-important. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes provide a perfect parallel to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the horror and the drama enhance each other symbiotically.

A Debated Finale

Together’s conclusion, which remains unspoiled, has left audiences divided on the film’s ultimate message about unhealthy partnerships. Reports indicate that unattached audience members have seen the movie as a powerful case for avoiding commitment. Meanwhile, some couples who were in conflict found that the film ultimately assisted them resolve their issues.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own response could act as a great barometer of how you perceive partnership. Will the conclusion plant feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you identify in Tim or Millie and scream at your TV, or simply turn to your other half and state, “I understand that choice”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can experience at this very moment.

Together is streaming on the streaming service Hulu at present.
